Rakuten Institute of Technology is the R&D lab of Rakuten group with teams in Tokyo, Boston, San Mateo, Paris, Singapore, and Bangalore and is in charge of the “core science” part of Rakuten AI platform programs.
Department Overview
The Vision Program, which is one of our core science programs, aims to process and understand images and videos using advanced computer vision and machine learning. We are working in areas such as estimating product attributes for large-scale image datasets for creating catalogs, robust document image understanding for smooth customer onboarding, image generation and enhancement for attractive, personalized recommendations, and other applications to handle the large amount of visual data in Rakuten's businesses. We are interested in leveraging techniques to increase efficiency during model training and deployment.

The Vision Program is looking for a research scientist with strong research background in the field of computer vision & machine learning who is motivated to join our team.
Position Details:
- Define scientific problems in the domain of generative vision AI to achieve academic and business outcomes
- Communicate with business stakeholders to understand requirements
- Create and support business outcomes by R&D
- Participate in conferences and contribute to the scientific community
Mandatory Qualifications:
- Doctoral degree in computer vision, machine learning or a related research area
- At least 3 years of experience working in computer vision or machine learning research (academia or industry) after receiving a Ph.D. degree
- Ability to drive a project forward and work independently
- Have an excellent track record of publishing papers in computer vision or related research fields
- Coding skills(fluency in Python or other languages)
- Familiarity with deep learning frameworks, e.g. PyTorch, Fastai, or TensorFlow
- Knowledge of image generation methods, e.g. GAN, stable diffusion
- English fluency for communicating with researchers, engineers, and business stakeholders
Desired Qualifications:
- Doctoral degree in computer vision, machine learning, or related research field
- International publication record
- Track record of projects (github repo)
- Web-programming knowledge (Linux/JavaScript)
- Familiarity with source control (git)
