This is an exciting opportunity for a data scientist to join a highly collaborative product data science team that works within the Elsevier Academic & Governments product group. The team helps to make the most out of Elsevier’s high-quality scientific content, data, and customer understanding. Embedded in the product teams we solve customer problems by creating recommendations and we help make faster and better decisions. 

About the Role 

The Senior Data Scientist II role entails defining project scopes and executing basic methods. Additionally, you will collaborate with teams to deliver outcomes, develop best practices, and mentor junior staff.
 

Responsibilities 

  • Working together with the rest of the team, for understanding product objectives, key results, and data science specific requirements.
  • Developing algorithms and machine learning techniques and apply them to a wide variety of tasks such as NLP solutions and recommender systems.
  • Driving the innovation and application of new techniques and methods as applicable, and continuously strive to improve our tools and data science practices.

Requirements 

Essential 

  • Able to understand of machine learning fundamentals, including model training, testing, and validation.
  • Experience working across data science programming languages and frameworks to get up to speed with new ones and choose the right tool for the job
  • Experience with feature engineering, data preparation, and data pipelines.
  • Experience in using techniques to optimize Large Language Models training and deployment
  • Experience with prototyping and running advanced models in production.
  • Able to independently develop and execute project management of small-scale projects, and able to execute project steps for more complicated project management tasks

Nice to have 

  • Knowledge and preferably some experience with recommendation systems. 
  • Can prototype ideas very quickly in software with minimal supervision 
  • Knowledge about the research ecosystem, experience with academia or other professional research. 

You are someone who 

  • Enjoys working in a collaborative and cooperative environment across technical disciplines and skill levels 
  • Is willing to take risks in learning new things and go beyond their comfort zone, mistakes are learning opportunities 
  • Is able to prioritise own work while keeping team and product priorities in mind 
  • Makes data science repeatable, follows existing procedures and be methodical in creating new ones
  • Is able to troubleshoot (own) projects and resolve issues.
Preferred academic background and professional experience 
  • Undergraduate degree in a relevant field and 4+ years of relevant work experience,  
  • Or a master's degree in a relevant field and 2+ years of relevant work experience.,
  • Or a PhD in a relevant field.
