About the Team
The Mid-training team does cross-cutting research, engineering, and execution, including activities classically associated with both pre-training and post-training. We improve OpenAI's flagship models, adding new capabilities and making them more efficient. Recent examples of artifacts with major contributions from our team include GPT4-Turbo and GPT-4o.
About the Role
One of the most important parts of improving ChatGPT is building and training on high quality datasets. Synthetic data has become an increasingly promising source of such data. We are looking for research engineers/scientists to help us create synthetic data, conduct research to understand the potential and limitations of different synthetic data methods, and use synthetic data for training state-of-the-art models.
Ideal candidates should have a strong technical background and general knowledge. Candidates should have familiarity with the quickly emerging LLM stack and experience in an applied Machine Learning setting. While prior experience on synthetic data is a bonus, it is not required for the role. A good fit for this role will be equally happy coming up with a creative breakthrough, investing in strengthening a baseline, designing an eval, browsing datasets for vibe checks, or executing careful scientific experiments.
This role is based in San Francisco, CA. We use a hybrid work model of 3 days in the office per week and offer relocation assistance to new employees.
In this role, you will:
Generate different types of synthetic data
Train models and run experiments to study the quality of synthetic data
Train SOTA models using the generated synthetic data
Lead other research bets involving data and data quality.
You might thrive in this role if you:
Have 3+ years of experience working with machine learning.
Highly skilled with Python.
Capable of leading ambitious machine learning projects.
Familiarity with Machine Learning, Deep Learning, and Large Language Models and related infrastructure (e.g. PyTorch)
Bonus: Experience working with synthetic data, or experience leading large LLM training efforts.
