Role Overview

The Artificial Intelligence Client Service (AICS) group at Fractal works with Fortune 500 companies to help them leverage their data using AI, Generative AI, and advanced algorithms to generate business value by empowering human decisions.

We are seeking a Principal Data Scientist to manage and grow a portfolio of AICS revenue, lead strategic client relationships, advise clients and Fractal’s leadership on the latest research and best practices, and consult on Fractal’s strategic direction in AI. This is a senior-level leadership role requiring strong technical and executive skills.

Responsibilities

Thought Leadership:

  • Collaborate with our sales and account managers to meet client executives, understand their data science strategy gaps, and advise them on how Fractal’s IP, staff, and prior experience can help bridge these gaps.

  • Organize client-facing as well as internal events to disseminate the latest developments in our data science projects and research.

  • Participate in Client Advisory Board meetings, industry events, and media interviews to share our expertise and insights.

Pre-Sales & Delivery:

  • Join sales calls as a Data Science expert to understand the needs of our clients and prospects.

  • Lead or co-lead teams that respond to Requests for Information/Proposal from clients and prospects.

  • Draft project proposals, including solution architecture, staffing and skill mix, and project schedules.

  • Work with Account and Engagement managers to plan AI components in P&L statements and prepare tailored sales pitches.

  • Deliver projects with cross-functional teams and ensure successful implementation of AI-led solutions.

Organizational Development:

  • Hire and manage teams of AI Engineers, Data Scientists, and MLOps professionals.

  • Mentor senior AI leaders to improve the AICS team’s growth and market presence.

  • Own key client accounts and drive their growth through strategic interventions.

  • Contribute to IP development initiatives and promote them to clients and executive groups, shaping Fractal AI's strategy.

Qualifications

Technical Skills:

  • Strong programming skills in at least one numerical computing language: Python or R.

  • Expertise in traditional statistical analysis, Bayesian modeling, traditional ML, Deep Learning, RL, and optimization, with deep specialization in at least two areas.

  • In-depth understanding of AI/GenAI algorithms from first principles.

  • Proficiency in DS coding best practices – version control, code linting and testing, cloud environments, and Linux OS.

  • Experience in operationalizing AI on cloud environments.

Soft Skills:

  • Executive presence – ability to build relationships with senior leadership at clients and Fractal.

  • Intellectual agility & stamina – the ability to quickly learn adjacent technical skills and effectively use constructive feedback.

  • Ambition and flexibility – the ability to work independently, own outcomes, and adapt to changing requirements.

  • Empathetic collaboration – the ability to empathize with clients and teams across functional roles, geographies, and cultures.

Experience & Education:

  • 10+ years of experience in delivering AI-led programs requiring complex technical abilities.

  • Experience consulting senior leadership on strategy, business value generation, and AI research.

  • Proven track record of managing cross-functional and distributed teams.

  • Graduate/undergraduate degree in a quantitatively rich discipline such as Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics, Operations Research [experience trumps degree].

Pay

The wage range for this role takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to skill sets; experience and training; licensure and certifications; and other business and organizational needs.  The disclosed range estimate has not been adjusted for the applicable geographic differential associated with the location at which the position may be filled.  At Fractal, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the range for their role and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case.  A reasonable estimate of the current range is: $175,000 - $250,000. In addition, for the current performance period, you may be eligible for a discretionary bonus.

As a full-time employee of the company or as an hourly employee working more than 30 hours per week, you will be eligible to participate in the health, dental, vision, life insurance, and disability plans in accordance with the plan documents, which may be amended from time to time.  You will be eligible for benefits on the first day of employment with the Company.  In addition, you are eligible to participate in the Company 401(k) Plan after 30 days of employment, in accordance with the applicable plan terms.   The Company provides for 11 paid holidays and 12 weeks of Parental Leave. We also follow a “free time” PTO policy, allowing you the flexibility to take time needed for either sick time or vacation.
