Role Description

Data is more important than ever. At Allianz Commercial, there’s an ever-increasing focus on data and data-driven decision-making and this role provides a fantastic opportunity for the right person to really make a difference.

Working closely with colleagues from across the business, you’ll get the chance to expand your knowledge of different data technologies and explore new and exciting capabilities—including Advanced Analytics, Machine Learning, GenAI and application deployment.

We increasingly work in a fast-paced, agile, and continuous delivery environment and we’ll rely on you to assess a multitude of analytical use cases and design models to optimise human decisions and manual processes across our business. The right candidate for this position will be motivated by this challenge and will help to develop our future ways of working.

This role will initially be an individual contributor role but may evolve into team leadership depending on requirements and the appetite of the candidate

About You

The core areas of skill in Data Science are Mathematics, Programming and Domain Expertise. Individuals have varying levels of skill across these categories, and very few people are highly skilled in all, so these items are used as a guide for relevant skills, but not a definitive tick list of mandatory items. Curiosity and continuous learning are key traits of successful data scientists. A Data Science Manager should have mastery in at least two domains, with at least some knowledge of the third.

Mathematics and statistics:

  • Linear Algebra and Calculus
  • Probability and statistics
  • Machine Learning theory and algorithms. e.g regression, association rule mining, clustering analysis, pattern recognition

Programming:

  • Python and SQL (preferable). Other languages such as R, C++, Java or Scala also relevant
  • Machine Learning and Deep Learning frameworks. e.g. Azure ML, Scikit-learn, Tensorflow, Pytorch
  • Natural Language Processing libraries. e.g., Spacy, BERT, NLTK, OpenAI
  • Visualisation frameworks. e.g., Matplotlib, Seaborn, Plotly, Bokeh, D3
  • Pipeline and deployment tools. e.g., Azure Synapse, Cronjobs, Airflow, FastAPI, MLFlow, Flask
  • Data processing and manipulation. e.g., Pandas, Spark, Kafka
  • Data Stores. Relational (e.g., Postgres, MySQL, Oracle), NoSQL (e.g. MongoDB, Elasticsearch, Neo4J, Redis)
  • Cloud computing platforms and tools. e.g., Azure, AWS, docker, Kubernetes
  • DevOps methods and tools. e.g., git, CI/CD, Jira, Confluence, Gitlab/GitHub

Domain Expertise:

  • Understanding of Insurance domain, and ability to influence and shape business use-cases.
  • Previous experience in Commercial Insurance pricing and underwriting would be an advantage
  • Curiosity, collaboration, creativity, problem solving and leadership.
  • Communication: Presentation, documentation, data storytelling
  • Experiment design and evaluation. e.g., A/B testing
  • Agile principles and methods (e.g., Scrum, Kanban)

Practical experience of:

  • Delivering tangible business benefit through end-to-end delivery (including production/operation) of at least 3 models, with proven net benefit
  • Guiding/Inspiring/Storytelling – communicating data insights to non-technical audiences through storytelling in order to engage, inspire and inform decision making.
  • Formulating and Prioritising Projects, working in collaboration with business stakeholders in order to ensure that the short- and long-term benefit from DS Activities.
  • Collecting and Integrating Data from diverse and challenging sources, and storing in non-traditional stores such as big data file formats and NoSQL stores
  • Operationalising Machine Learning Models, integrating into the business, as well as in a maintainable, robust technical solution
