We are seeking a Manager of Data Science Products to join our growing software team. This position is hybrid or remote with the ideal candidate being near our software development center in Herndon, VA, USA.

The primary function of this role is to manage the team of full stack software engineers and QA automation testing engineers who are dedicated to the Data Science Team’s products. These products include Wartsila’s automated electricity market bidding platform, Wartsila’s forecasting platform for machine learning based enhancements of renewable power and electricity price forecasts, Wartsila’s GEMS optimization plugins for Solar+Storage and islanded grid contexts where GEMS is optimizing the dispatch of hybrid power plant resources directly, and various other full stack software products serving both internal and external customers.


This manager will work cross functionally within the data science team, the broader software team, and product management to ensure that all new and existing software products within the Data Science organization are advanced along their respective product roadmaps. The scope includes adding new features and capabilities while high quality expectations are realized with dependency updates and development of quality assurance testing and automation processes. Especially valued is experience in full stack software engineering, team leadership experience, experience with software for critical infrastructure where high reliability and quality is demanded, experience in utility scale energy storage systems, experience in the renewable power sector, commercial aptitude, and communication.

Essential Responsibilities
• Lead the team that builds and develops the data science software products.
• Collaboration with product management, engineering, and technology teams.
• Lead the quality assurance testing automation for all data science software products, including collaboration with other QA testing automation groups in the business and leveraging and contributing to existing frameworks.
• Provide subject matter expertise to the business, especially in collaboration with the broader software organization and all GEMS products.
• Support other business needs on topics including scalability and cyber security.
• Communicate complex technical findings and concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders alike.
• Write documentation on product architecture to clearly communicate the structure of our software modules and cloud hosted infrastructure.

The candidate must be able to embrace the fast and dynamic environment of a growth stage company, comfortable with adjusting quickly to changing priorities.

Qualifications/Requirements
• BS in computer science, computer engineer, software engineering, or similar, or commensurate level of work experience.
• Demonstrated good management experience (1+ years).
• Extensive experience with full stack software development environments.
• An expert in node.js, react, and python programming languages (7-10 years).
• Track record of a career trajectory in software product development.
• Can work independently and provide strong leadership.
• Experience with time-series data.
• Can architect object-oriented platforms that handle time series data and multiple APIs.
• Familiarity with PySpark or similar.
• Familiarity with common cloud platforms like GCP, Azure, and AWS.
