OVERVIEW:

At M&T Bank, Customer insights and market perspective are critical inputs into all key business decisions. To that end, the Data Science Director reports to the EVP, Analytics and is responsible for directing customer analytics initiatives for M&T Bank. We are seeking an outstanding candidate to lead this important enterprise wide function.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Responsible for creating model design, development, application, tracking, and management
  • policies and procedures and governance of all marketing and customer management models.
  • Lead the design, development, application and execution of all marketing and customer models and application of advanced statistical methods (such DOE, clustering, data reduction, choice modeling, simulation, forecasting, etc.), to address marketing and business questions.
  • Serve as an expert in test design, sampling, multivariate testing, design of experiments and develop testing schemes and sampling plan to support A/B and multivariate testing.
  • Provide actionable and insightful recommendations from data mining, segmentation, customer analyses with the goals of identifying acquisition, cross-sell, up-sell, and retention opportunities.
  • Large scale data analytics program delivery and management - Agile, DevOps
  • Lead engagements in advanced analytics, data visualization and process automation
  • Present results of the analyses, insights, and recommendations to senior management.
  • Participate in strategic marketing decisions relating to customer needs, preferences, behaviors, and segmentation, as well as advertising, direct marketing, and digital marketing efforts.
  • Collaborate with other partners within Marketing to develop strong relationships with internal clients (business units) and understand their needs pertaining to advanced analytics and customer insights.
  • Develop and maintain close relationships with model review, approval, and validation committees. Present model methodology, approach and model details to Model Risk Oversight Committee, Compliance, etc., and gain their approval of our models.
  • Serve as the technical thought leader and develop team’s expertise on the latest statistical techniques, test designs, sampling procedures, and scoring algorithms through industry research, vendors, etc.
  • Continuously evaluate new data sources to enhance the efficacy of predictive models.
  • Oversee the validation, tracking, and monitoring the performance of statistical models, and development of next-generation models.

NATURE AND SCOPE:

The Data Science team partners with the Marketing, Business and Segment teams to identify the advanced analytics needs and then develops, implements, monitors and maintains sophisticated predictive models (including response, propensity-to-buy, attrition, lifetime value, etc.) that best achieve marketing and business goals. We are seeking an outstanding candidate to lead this important function.

 

This is a leadership position, and we are seeking a manager with seasoned leadership and excellent people management skills -- one who can help us develop exceptional advanced analytics capabilities. This position is also responsible for developing and managing strong relationships with internal clients (business groups) and understanding their needs pertaining to advanced analytics. This person will present results of analyses and recommendations senior managers and executives and collaborate with cross-functional business partners on key bank initiatives. This position is also responsible for directing our on-shore and off-shore analytics teams

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

PhD or Master’s Degree, preferably in a quantitative or related field (statistics, economics, machine learning, data science, computer science etc.).

Minimum ten years relevant experience.

Minimum four years supervisory experience.

Broad knowledge of machine learning and statistics, with the ability to deep dive as well as converse at the executive level.

Ability to build strong relationships with business partners across various functions.

Experience in managing analytics vendors and partner relationships

Ability to assume project-oriented work requiring the combination of synthesizing information and presenting findings that aid in managerial decision making.

In-depth knowledge of statistical tools (e.g., SAS, SPSS) and techniques (linear regression, time series analysis, factor analysis, cluster analysis etc.) used for modeling, segmentation, and in-depth data analysis.

Hands-on experience in one or more programming languages and data science tools- Python, R, SAS, SQL, Tableau, AzureML, Power BI, etc.

Agile experience

Ability to work in a fast-paced, multi-tasked environment

Superb verbal and written communication skills.

Confidence and poise in interacting with senior executives.

Proven ability to effectively coach and develop talent

IDEAL QUALIFICATIONS PREFERRED:

Five or more years of Banking or Financial services industry experience

Experience in managing and overseeing offshore analytics vendors.

Experience in managing professionals across various analytical disciplines including consultants, statisticians, data analysts, and reporting analysts.

Three years marketing and/or management consulting experience

Sharp value focus and business outcome orientation

Experience in a regulatory environment
