The Program

At Novo Nordisk, interns will have the opportunity to work closely with experienced industry professionals and gain valuable, hands-on, full-time work experience.   For ten weeks, interns will be immersed in the environment of a global pharmaceutical company and contribute to the line of business by providing sustainable and meaningful project work.  Our internship program also includes instructor led trainings, a leadership engagement series, and a guided mentorship program to offer professional and personal development. 

Program Start: June 3rd, 2024.

Program End: August 9th, 2024.

Scope of Position

The core responsibility of the Natural Language Processing (NLP) Data Science intern is to build and deliver Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning (AI/ML) and NLP capabilities in the pharmaceutical development space. The NLP data science intern will collaborate with data scientists and engineers within AI and Analytics team to design, code, train, test, and deploy innovative NLP solutions. The intern will build NLP models such as named entity recognition, relationship extraction, text classification, and information extraction using state-of-the-art deep learning techniques on unstructured clinical text documents. The intern will define performance metrics for models in accordance with the project requirements and evaluate algorithms and models for effectiveness and accuracy. They will document and present the experimental results to share the learning. The developed NLP models will be used in larger AI/ML projects in drug development such as event adjudication, adverse event detection for drug safety, and incidental findings for patient cohort identification.

The ideal candidate should be in MS or PhD program in computer science or related technical field and have good knowledge of machine learning, NLP and deep learning. The intern needs to have proven python programming skills with hands-on experience building solutions with data science packages such as Pytorch, TensorFlow, Keras, Pandas, Jupyter, NumPy, spaCy, and Scikit-learn. Experience working with version control systems (e.g. Git), cloud work environment (e.g. AWS), SQL and NoSQL databases is a plus.

Qualifications

  • Must be a current student enrolled or recently graduated (graduation date no earlier than April 2024) at/from an accredited college or university pursuing at least a bachelor’s degree.
  • A completed or in progress master’s or doctorate degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Natural language Processing or a related discipline preferred.
  • Proven python programming skills and experience with Pytorch, TensorFlow, Keras, Pandas, Jupyter, NumPy, spaCY, and Scitkit-learn preferred.
  • Experience working with version control systems (e.g. Git), cloud work environment (e.g. AWS), SQL, and NoSQL databases preferred.
  • Strong academic record with a preferred cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.
  • Conscientious self-starter with good organizational skills, project management skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to balance multiple projects and priorities, must be able to multi-task.
  • Strong interpersonal communication and ability to collaborate with teams; must effectively operate independently, across functional lines, and with internal customers.
  • Demonstrated personal initiative, self-motivation, flexibility, adaptability and willingness to learn.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Tools including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.
