Role 

We are looking for a lawyer to join our legal team to lead our corporate legal function operating out of either our New York or San Francisco offices.  You will serve as a core legal advisor to the company, providing expert guidance on a variety of legal matters, with a particular focus on corporate issues, issues relating to the Board of Directors, international expansion, regulatory compliance, and employment law. You will ensure that the company operates within the law at all times and will operate as an effective guardian of the organization.  This is a strategic role and you will help advise on and facilitate strategic business development.

Responsibilities

Generative AI has the power to greatly change the world and directly impact how things get done.  Harvey is at the forefront of this change, and our mission is to make generative AI actionable and useful for our customers.  This is a fast moving environment (we are a start-up!) that is serving some of the world’s most renowned law firms and professional organizations.    And this role will put you in the center of all of this.

  • Legal Leadership and Strategy:

    • Develop and lead corporate legal strategy to promote and protect the company.

    • Provide strategic advice to senior management including around international expansion.

    • Set internal governance policies and manage the impact of external factors.

    • Anticipate issues and estimate risks strategically, identifying proactive solutions that will eliminate or mitigate risks.

  • Corporate Governance:

    • Collaborate with management to devise efficient defense strategies.

    • Specify internal governance policies and regularly monitor compliance.

    • Apply effective risk management techniques and offer proactive advice on possible legal issues.

  • Real Estate Advisory:

    • Oversee all real estate transactions, including leases.

  • Compliance Oversight:

    • Ensure compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations.

    • Develop and oversee control systems to prevent violations of legal guidelines and internal policies.

    • Evaluate the efficiency of controls and improve them continuously.

    • Revise procedures, reports, etc. periodically to identify hidden risks or non-conformity issues.

  • Employment Law Expertise:

    • Advise on labor and employment matters including disputes, structuring employment contracts.

    • Guide human resources on the development of policies and procedures.

    • Provide legal support on employee relations, compensation and benefits, and performance management.

  • Risk Management:

    • Draft and solidify agreements, contracts, and other legal documents to ensure the company’s full legal rights.

    • Deal with complex matters with multiple stakeholders and forces.

    • Provide clarification on legal language or specifications to everyone in the organization.

Qualifications 

  • A law degree from an accredited law school

  • Admitted to practice law and in good standing in at least one jurisdiction and able to practice in California or New York 

  • 8+ years of legal experience, preferably with a focus on corporate law, gained through a combination of law firm and in-house positions.   

  • Experience dealing with real estate law, compliance issues, and employment law. 

  • Ability to think creatively, function independently and work proactively in a fast-paced environment

  • High degree of professional ethics and integrity.

  • Outstanding communication skills.

  • Team-focused and collaborative work style; willingness to build expertise and solve new challenges in an evolving practice

  • Hyper-responsive and service-oriented attitude  

  • Bonus qualifications include experience with AI, and a love for solving hard problems with a small tight-knit team.

Compensation 

In consideration of market analysis and relevant factors, the salary range for this position is set between $200,000 and $400,000. However, adjustments outside of this range may be considered for candidates whose qualifications significantly differ from those outlined in the job description.

Additionally, this role is eligible to participate in our equity plan and benefits program. Benefits include, but not limited to: Comprehensive health, dental and vision coverage, retirement benefits (401k match up to 4%), and flexible PTO.
