Altana provides the world’s only dynamic, intelligent map of the global supply chain - the Altana Atlas - using AI and machine learning models to connect with and learn from massive sets of public and private data. Through the Atlas, companies and governments can understand the distant origins of products well beyond their own direct suppliers; discover trading relationships and national security risks deep in their networks; measure labor and environmental impacts; identify related risks and opportunities; ensure effective compliance and enforcement with trade requirements; and collaborate to manage all of it.

We have built a fundamental understanding of how the world’s economy works, and the implications for global resiliency, sustainability and opportunity are enormous. Backed by leading investors and used by the world’s most important organizations (Maersk, US Customs and Border Protection, Boston Scientific, and more), Altana’s mission is to power a new era of globalization organized around trusted supply chain networks.

This is a lofty mission, and our success depends on building a diverse, global team and creating an environment in which they can thrive. We operate in accordance with our values: we focus on value creation, not capture; we foster diversity and embrace difference; we embrace reality; we get things done; we amaze our clients. When you join Altana, you’ll be joining a vibrant, collaborative team working together to solve complex problems with the potential for global societal impact.

The Opportunity at Altana

We are looking to hire a Director of Field Engineering to design, build, and scale our technical professional services capability for the purpose of delivering increased value for our customers’ unique mission sets. You will work closely with our delivery teams, both on the technical implementation and account management sides, to scope engagements that go beyond our out-of-the-box capabilities. You will build and manage a team of client-facing customization specialists, and work with our product and engineering teams to expand the customization capabilities we have in the platform.

Your Responsibilities

  • Design the framework for us to deliver field engineering to clients, both enterprise and government.
  • Work with sales and customer teams to define, scope, manage, and operate client customizations for specific customers, starting with a small set of test customers.
  • Build and scale the team to deliver these services across multiple engagements in both the enterprise and government sectors simultaneously, including lifecycle management of the customizations within and along with our product expansions and customization capabilities.
  • Provide feedback to our product and engineering teams and work with them to shape the customization capability roadmap.
  • Build strong relationships with customers, operate as a trusted partner, and grow the demand for our field engineering professional services.

About You

  • Extensive customer management skills in scoping engagements and taking messy, often ill-formed requirements, and elucidating intent, then fulfilling that intent within the platform and cost envelope.
  • You have empathy for customers’ challenges, excel at seeing problems from their perspective, and can optimize according to their needs.
  • Experience making actionable intelligence out of data and insights for customers; we don’t aim just to inform, we equip our customers with decisions to evolve their businesses.
  • More than ten years of experience in a technical professional services role, preferably some combination of analytics, data visualization, and data architecture.
  • At least five years supervisory experience.
  • You love storytelling with data, understanding what is critical to a customer, and how to marry the two in compelling narratives.

This role is…

  • This role is hybrid, based in the United States, with the option to work from one of our hubs in New York City, SF/Bay Area, Boston, or Washington D.C.
  • The role may require sporadic travel to client locations
