At the Fraunhofer IPT in Aachen, we work with more than 530 employees every day to make the production of the future more digital, more flexible and more sustainable. In vitro tissue production promises innovative applications in regenerative medicine and reduces the need for laboratory animals for drug screening. However, tissue production is resource-intensive and quality assessments of the respective tissue samples are currently only carried out using destructive-invasive procedures, in which the expensive tissue sample can no longer be used even if the results are positive. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) offers a promising solution, allowing non-invasive imaging at µm level and thus enabling continuous quality testing of living tissue. By extracting and evaluating quality markers and patterns from OCT images using image processing and deep learning algorithms, we can predict tissue quality, adapt production conditions and reuse live samples.

What you will do

  • Familiarization with the state of the art in AI, image processing, Computer Vision and Optical Coherence Tomography
  • Comparison and selection of suitable classical and Deep-Learning-based image processing algorithms
  • Development and training of the selected models using OCT images of in-vitro-tissue samples
  • Creation of heuristics to compare the predefined quality metrics with the model predictions
  • Evaluation and documentation of the results

What you bring to the table

  • You are studying computer science, data science, medical technology, industrial engineering or a comparable technical subject
  • Interest in trend topics such as regenerative medicine, digitalisation, data science, artificial intelligence and computer vision
  • A high degree of initiative and team spirit
  • Very good language skills in German and English

What you can expect

  • Ideal conditions for practical experience alongside your studies
  • Professional supervision and collaboration in a dedicated team
  • A state-of-the-art machine park equipped with edge cloud systems and 5G- infrastructure
  • Flexible working to combine study and job in the best possible way

We value and promote the diversity of our employees' skills and therefore welcome all applications - regardless of age, gender, nationality, ethnic and social origin, religion, ideology, disability, sexual orientation and identity. Severely disabled persons are given preference in the event of equal suitability.
