At the Fraunhofer IPT in Aachen, we work with more than 530 employees every day to make the production of the future more digital, more flexible and more sustainable. In vitro tissue production promises innovative applications in regenerative medicine and reduces the need for laboratory animals for drug screening. However, tissue production is resource-intensive and quality assessments of the respective tissue samples are currently only carried out using destructive-invasive procedures, in which the expensive tissue sample can no longer be used even if the results are positive. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) offers a promising solution, allowing non-invasive imaging at µm level and thus enabling continuous quality testing of living tissue. By extracting and evaluating quality markers and patterns from OCT images using image processing and deep learning algorithms, we can predict tissue quality, adapt production conditions and reuse live samples.
