The Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology ILT is Europe's leading center for contract research and development in the field of laser technology.

The "Laser Polishing" group is working on the automation of process parameter development and has upgraded a laser polishing machine with measurement technology for this purpose. For complete automation, an intelligent system must control the laser process, measure surface topographies and then analyze them using imaging techniques in order to ultimately draw conclusions about the process quality. The intelligence must qualify the best parameters from a large number of experiments with different process parameters and further optimize the process parameter development independently. 

Each of the tasks mentioned represents a software module. The heart of the system is a database that contains all the information on process parameter development and can be accessed by the various software modules. 

Both the data analysis and the database as well as interfaces to the software modules still need to be developed and tested. You will accompany this process and contribute your expertise and ideas to this development process.

What you will do

  • Conceptual design and development of a database for the process parameter development of the "laser polishing" process in Python
  • Development of interfaces between the database and software modules in Python and .NET 6 (C-sharp)
  • Analysis of image data in the field of laser polishing, development of metrics to qualify the process quality

What you bring to the table

  • You are studying a STEM subject, but can also study something else if you meet the other requirements
  • You have experience in creating and working on databases and have ideally already set up and maintained databases yourself
  • You already have good experience with Python or a similar programming language
  • You have a high level of analytical thinking and work independently

Remuneration is based on the general works agreement on the employment of auxiliary staff.
The weekly working time is 14 hours.
The position is initially limited to 6 months, after which a longer term is also possible.
