Over the last three years, Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute (HHI) has led a UN Focus Group (a partnership between the International Telecommunication Union, World Meteorological Organization, and UN Environment) exploring the potential of AI to support the detection, forecasting, and communication of natural disasters (e.g., through early warning systems), and laid the groundwork for international standards. As the Focus Group transitions into a Global Initiative, it will build on these activities. In parallel, Fraunhofer HHI is involved in a new Working Group on Digital Transformation for Hydrology and Water Resources at the World Meteorological Organization. To support both the Global Initiative and the Working Group, we are looking for motivated student assistants. Become a part of our team and join us on our journey of research and innovation!
What you will do
Assist with systematic literature reviews
Input and manage data in spreadsheets or databases, ensuring accuracy and completeness
Draft and format reports, graphs, and charts
Help organize workshops and meetings
Prepare presentation materials and handouts for workshops and meetings
Manage communication with workshop participants, including sending invitations and follow-up emails
Help maintain the groups online presence by drafting and editing blog posts, newsletters, and social media content
What you bring to the table
Full-time student at a German university or FH studying geoscience, computer science (with focus on machine learning, ethical AI, human-centered AI), or a field tied to communication (Literature, English, Multimedia)
An interest in geoscience, human-centered artificial intelligence, and scientific communication
Strong social skills and professionalism
Strong writing and editing skills
Experience in data and modeling related methods (practical experience in AI is a bonus)
Attention to detail
Ability to juggle multiple tasks and meet deadlines
Excellent spoken and written English (native English is desirable)

The position is initially limited to 1 year. An extension is explicitly desired.
The monthly working time is 80 hours. This position is also available on a part-time basis.
