Safe Intelligence - this forms the core brand of the Fraunhofer Institute for Cognitive Systems IKS. Connected cognitive systems drive innovation in many sectors, including mobility, healthcare, and automation in industry. Disruptive technologies such as artificial intelligence and quantum computing play a key role here. Fraunhofer IKS is conducting research to ensure that these applications are reliable and verifiably safe. We consider resilience and intelligence to be part of the same process.

What you will do

Quantum computing is predicted as disruptive, emerging technology with potential big impact in many industrial areas. At Fraunhofer IKS we work on a series of different projects related to enabling robust and reliable applications of quantum computing (link). Within the area of quantum machine learning, we e.g. research how we could improve classical medical imaging procedures by quantum-assisted methods. This includes quantum Bayesian neural networks, which have a potential to allow for better uncertainty estimation for deep neural networks that is particularly import in medical sector. We offer interested students to participate in this cutting-edge research via a working student position.

What you bring to the table

  • the formal requirements for a master thesis in physics, computer science or an adjacent subject at a German university or university of applied sciences
  • basic knowledge in quantum computing
  • basic knowledge in mathematical optimization and/or machine learning
  • programming skills (preferably Python, Qiskit or Pennylane)
  • experience with working in Linux environments
  • interest in applied research and the transfer of state-of-the-art methods to relevant applications.

What you can expect

  • good and individual supervision, a positive working environment and flexible work model
  • close integration into a dynamic team working in various innovative quantum-related fields
  • application-driven extension of your studies.

We value and promote the diversity of our employees' skills and therefore welcome all applications - regardless of age, gender, nationality, ethnic and social origin, religion, ideology, disability, sexual orientation and identity. Severely disabled persons are given preference in the event of equal suitability. Remuneration according to the general works agreement for employing assistant staff.

With its focus on developing key technologies that are vital for the future and enabling the commercial utilization of this work by business and industry, Fraunhofer plays a central role in the innovation process. As a pioneer and catalyst for groundbreaking developments and scientific excellence, Fraunhofer helps shape society now and in the future.
