The Opportunity:
We are looking for a business-savvy lawyer who can balance risk, make sound judgments and win negotiations. The Deputy General Counsel role will oversee all Company legal matters and provide executive-level leadership and guidance to the organization, across all departments regarding governance, contracts, corporate compliance, M&A, litigation, dispute resolution management, data privacy, employment law, artificial intelligence, due diligence and any other legal needs as required.
Strong candidates will have an obsession with operational and legal excellence, while still maintaining the agility required in a high-growth startup atmosphere. This role is responsible for setting, enforcing, and evaluating legally compliant policies, procedures, and best practices to achieve long-range strategic goals. The ideal candidate must possess general counsel experience at a high-growth startup with expertise in the data privacy/tech industry.
This position will be a top-leader in the organization and report directly to our Chief Operating Officer. The Deputy General Counsel will work collaboratively and responsively with a broad range of colleagues across functions, ensuring good relationships between legal, sales, finance, human resources and operations to facilitate a coordinated team approach.
Responsibilities:
- Build and oversee a world-class Legal organization, managing the workflow of the Legal team
- Represent the company and employees in a full range of legal matters, including labor and employment, contract, intellectual property, litigation, and more.
- Assess, improve and operationalize legal processes ensuring compliance as it relates to laws, regulations, and requirements.
- Build and maintain relationships with outside counsel.
- Manage outside counsel budget, activities, and reduce usage.
- Provide strategic partnership to executive leaders, and ensure alignment to organizational strategy, values, and principles.
- Partner with the People team regarding various personnel matters, policies, and complex employee relations issues.
- Educate, inform and regularly update internal teams and leadership on relevant law changes that impact their day to day work flow through written communication, joining ad hoc meetings, presenting in a virtual training live or through pre-recorded webinar.
- Attend all benefit committee meetings including renewal meetings with outside brokers.
- Maintain knowledge of laws, regulations, and best practices with an emphasis on employment law, data privacy and artificial intelligence..
- Perform other related duties as assigned.

- Excellent leadership and team building skills, with proven ability to inspire and manage a high-performing team
- Strong ability to present and articulate legal issues, changes and recommendations
- Demonstrated success in building internal trust and strong relationships with business partners
- Knowledge of, and ability to apply, applicable laws, guidelines, regulations, and policies
- Excellent time management and organizational skills with a proven ability to work in a fast-paced and rapidly evolving environment
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Proficient with G-Suite, Slack, Microsoft Office Suite or related software.
Education and Requirements:
- A Juris Doctor (JD) degree from accredited law school and licensed to practice law in at least one US state. Licensure must be in good standing with no historical disciplinary action.
- 10+ years of significant and broad-based experience in multiple legal disciplines, including federal and state employment law and data privacy and emerging AI.
- 4-6 years serving as in-house Legal Counsel, Associate General Counsel, Deputy General Counsel, or a similar position that operates with employees across multiple US states
- Experience working at a software as a service (SaaS) company or similar forward thinking technology company
