Job Title : Chapter Area Lead - Generative AI

As we continue our pursuit of NPS +30 we need to transform the way we engage with our customers and colleagues. This requires a shift from a two-track digital vs assisted approach to instead a deeply personal and empathic end-to-end digital experience enriched and augmented by our colleagues. This will require self-healing adaptive work orchestration systems that can blend the capabilities of our colleague, AI, and APIs. These systems must be able to handle the high frequency of exceptional circumstances that arise during our customer journeys, all while remaining compliant with policies and regulations without the significant change and maintenance burden of today. The Gen AI Domain has been set up to build the tools and capabilities needed within the group tapping into the promise of Generative AI as a key technology to solve those needs. This team will be leading an initiative called “Transformer Banking”.

This domain within CDAO is focused on solution practices, tools and platforms required to successfully leverage Large Language Models, rather than the tools and capabilities required to create those models. We will accomplish this through building: technology platforms and tools such as the Gen AI Hub including RAG tooling, knowledge management services, LLM access and control planes; business platforms and tools such as the Customer Conversation Manager and Customer Activity Manager; and practice capability co-creating patterns and practices for Gen AI usage in solutions with crews across CBA leveraging our services alongside other frameworks/libraries.

Team :

Gen AI domain will provide services, tools and practices to enable crews across CBA to safely and effectively leverage Generative AI as components of more traditional solutions. We are looking for people who can thrive in a high level of ambiguity, have a strong team culture, are obsessed about customer needs, constantly think about how to effectively manage a wide variety of risks, and are passionate about the potential to lead the world in transforming a large enterprise in a heavily regulated environment using Gen AI as the technology evolves.

As a Chapter Area Lead for Gen AI, you’ll be managing a large team of engineers and engineering managers with diverse core skillsets with a specialisation in leveraging Generative AI. You will be ensuring optimal goal setting, performance, career development and engagement. You would have an opportunity to work alongside Chapter leads, Chief Engineers, across-location stakeholders in a matrix structure.   • Matrix reporting structure
    • Direct line reporting into the GM, AI & Analytics Lead, India
    • Functional reporting line into Gen AI Domain Lead, Australia

Roles & Responsibilities:

You will lead a team of Engineering Managers, Data Scientists, Product Owners, Enabling Managers; that will be helping to build the platforms, tools and services provided by the Gen AI domain to our internal customers. These cross-capability teams reporting int chapters; will be spread across multiple squads delivering to effectively use our solutions through co-engineering on Gen AI Hub or Transformer Banking Experience. You’ll have the opportunity to take responsibility for thought leadership, people management, capability uplift, continuous improvement, ensuring our engineers and other discipline teams are inspired to do the work that matters! For the Prompt Engineering and Knowledge Engineering disciplines, you will also be responsible to helping shape what these emerging job families require, and working with the technology leadership teams and AI domain group practice on job pathways.

Collaborate & Partner

  • Collaborate closely with executive/senior stakeholders, shaping the future of our capabilities across Engineers, PO, Data Scientists, Enabling managers etc.
  • Collaborate with POs to find opportunities where the Chapter can drive value.
  • Cultivate key internal and external partnerships, wherever required.
  • Act as a key liaison between the various support & cross functional teams across Australia & India
  • Partner with Crews and/or COE leads to determine skillset and capability requirements to sustainably meet resourcing needs.

Drive & Execute Strategy

  • Elevate craft capabilities, strategically applying expertise across the portfolio to accelerate Gen AI delivery.
  • Key focus to help build necessary capability to drive Crews OKRs. Help the Crew roadmap in terms of engineering best practices, in line with the broader technology strategy, and oversee the delivery of technology outcomes for the crew by ensuring alignment to reference architecture, enterprise data standards, application simplification and modernization agendas.
  • Cloud cost optimization by aligning with the crew and product owners by driving in automations.
  • Drive a Tech culture of continuous improvement (CI).
  • Participate in planning, definition and high-level growth of people’s career; people movement across squads, assist Squads to identify the right technical skilled people.
  • Have demonstrable software development experience. You are willing to learn and jump into the deep end of technical problems and dive into code
  • Can demonstrate a thorough understanding of software design and software development lifecycle. Are familiar with emerging tech and methodologies.

Lead & drive cultural change 

  • Bring a friendly and “can-do” attitude and teamwork and inspire others on culture change needed to build an “Engineering Mindset” and “AI First Mindset”.
  • Lead a team and support the wider CBA India LT in developing a positive culture by demonstrating CBA values in your approach to your responsibilities.
  • Drive a one team culture across engineers to manage competing priorities and share best practices
  • Design and implement a framework for accredited learning pathways, reskilling and talent transformation for making the workforce worldclass
  • Build a Strong academy for people to upskill and certify to become proficient in multiple technologies and capabilities
  • Support implementation of practices from the chapters, foster an environment of cross tooling and training,  provided in the Crew e.g. architecture, engineering governance and controls.
  • Accountable for the development, performance management and career progression of a number of Technology roles e.g. Software and Systems Engineers

Essential Skills :

  • Experienced leader with strong people management and stakeholder management capabilities and backgrounds e.g. Platform Engineering, Architecture, Data
  • Strong Leadership (including People Management), not just Project Management
  • Have tech delivery expertise (i.e. an expert in tech that can also get tech delivery done)
  • High level of communications and negotiation skills, including the demonstrated ability to solicit opinions and accept feedback.
  • Experience in operating effectively as part of cross-functional teams.
  • Proficiency in key capabilities – IT SDLC processes, written documentation/ specification skills
  • Experience in working across a number of technical domains with the ability to understand new emerging technical skills, help team to implement optimal solutions by cross-skilling them.
  • Have experience in Prompt Engineering / Platform Engineering / Knowledge Engineering disciplines
  • Exposure to tools/services/capabilities like:
    • Cloud Solution Architecture/Development/Security/IaaC (AWS + Azure)
    • Python / TypeScript / C#
    • Gen AI frameworks & tools (e.g. Langchain, Semantic Kernel)
    • Vector/Graph/SQL Databases
    • Non-deterministic automated testing
    • Machine Learning, including LLM fine-tuning
    • System Reliability Engineering
    • Secure Coding

Qualifications :

  • Education: Advanced degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Maths, Statistics, or related field
  • Minimum of 15 years of experience in relevant field, with 5+ years of experience in core technology organization or Banking
  • Proven track record of building and leading a team of engineering professionals.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to identify creative solutions to complex problems.
  • Strong cross-cultural communication skills and the ability to effectively manage collaboration across time zones.
