In cooperation with the Chair of Optical Systems Technology TOS, the Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology ILT, a leading center for contract research and development in the field of laser technology, is offering the opportunity to write a thesis.

By using suitable sensors to record the condition of components and processes, individual laser manufacturing processes, which have so far eluded detailed digital analysis and description, are to be mapped into the digital world. For optimal monitoring of the processes, an evaluation is to be carried out using the combined information from various sensors.

In addition to raw data (images, videos, multivariate time series), various sensors and cameras also provide specific information about the process quality. This can involve recognized error structures or the classification of the process in IO and NIO. An AI approach is to be developed for the interaction of these sensors, which combines the results of the individual sensors and makes a standardized statement about the process quality. In addition, a deep learning model can be developed that combines the sensors at raw data level and thus ensures, for example, further improved detection of errors or anomalies.

Knowledge in the field of laser technology is advantageous, but not essential.

What you will do

  • Familiarization with the topic of AI-supported process monitoring based on multimodal sensor technology
  • Planning and independent execution of experiments using the example of laser beam welding
  • Analysis, evaluation, processing and presentation of the results

What you bring to the table

  • You are a Bachelor's/Master's student in physics, mechanical engineering, materials science or a comparable degree program
  • Interest in process technology and data science
  • An independent and conscientious way of working
  • Knowledge of programming with Python and initial experience in the field of data science

What you can expect

  • Practice-oriented thesis in an innovative working environment
  • A creative, diverse, multidisciplinary team with in-depth knowledge
  • Tasks with responsibility and creative freedom
  • Close cooperation between science and industry
  • First-class equipment in the laboratories and offices
  • Good transport links (bus connections, free parking garage)
  • Flexible working hours for a better work-study balance

The position is temporary until completion of the thesis.
